The massacres, rapes, captures of 1823 have never been counted in Evia. They are compared only with those of Chios, Kassos, Psara, Naoussa and Messolonghi. There were countless families who were exiled in a miserable situation seeking refuge in Attica, Gia, Aegina and the Sporades.Heroes of the effort to rescue them are the Evia captains and sailors as well as those of the Greek islands and coastal areas. According to a rough calculation, 1/3 of the island was decimated, and as many took the road of refuge, while an unknown number of men fled with the army of one or another chieftain to the various islands. Less than 1/3 of the population remained in Evia. In the meantime, a number of Euboean families (mainly from Karystia) had already left at the beginning of the Greeks' operations. The island was almost deserted in many places. The destruction was particularly severe in (then) Karystia, from the villages of Kymi to Aliveri and from Avlonari to Karystos, but also in Mantoudi, Agia Anna, Limni and North Evia, etc. [...] It is estimated that the dead and those who surrendered subsequently exceeded 15,000 people, while several thousand were displaced, captured, etc. The massacres of Evia by the Ottomans of all kinds are due to a huge extent to the initiator of the suppression of the Revolution in Evia, Omer Bey of Karystos (Kizilhisarli) and the enlistment of the aforementioned Ottoman troops, which he called to the island. As much as he himself tried in some cases to rescue some few inhabitants, who were either necessary and useful to him, or connected to him by some friendly or other relationship. One does not negate the other fact .The Ottoman Government awarded him the title of Pasha of Euripo and entrusted him with the responsibility of this nerve-wracking crossroads and stronghold of the Ottoman Empire, as a reward for his strategic value and the zeal he had shown.
